Back-to-School Blog Hop -- A Rose by any other Name

It's my turn, it's my turn... and I have been enjoying all the information that has been shared so far. How about you?

My topic today is Fast-Piece Applique, and in case this is the first time we are meeting FPA is a method of constructing a quilt top that looks like applique but is really piecing and makes stitching circles and curves a breeze.

Back just before my 3rd book came out I had shared a how to YouTube video. Since then I am always asked for the rose pattern used as the sample, and finally today you'll find it by clicking here.

It was a lot of fun to put this small quilt together recently and get to finish it off so entirely different than I might have back when the video came out.
So, I hope you grab the pattern, then copy it to freezer paper and try it for yourself.

I started with silks -- what color to make the rose? Pink, yellow, red, white, purple... so many to choose from.

then came picking the fabrics for each pattern piece:
then prepping the fabrics.

Next, I chose pairs and stitched them all together just like in the video, and then on to stitching set in pieces like the one below. (there is a piecing list noted on the pattern)

 

 

 

 

Trimming everything as you go along is important, so remember to lift the paper and trim close to stitching on the top.

 

Fast-Piece Applique is one of those methods that can be used to create almost any type of quilt easily, and also be mixed with other traditional construction methods. In my latest book, Mandy Leins and I teamed up to stitch up the rose in an entirely different way -- the roses were actually not stitched but glued. Then Mandy did her stitching magic to pull it all together into a fuzzy, fantastic quilt.

Fast-Piece Applique: Blog Tour Day 4 GenerationQ --- SWAK

Welcome to day 4 of the blog tour.
Today is another day where a long time friend and her cohorts at Generation Q Magazine are joining the fun.

Back when I had just left my corporate life behind, and I was showing my quilt art at fine art festivals there was a visitor to my booth. Little did I know that that young woman and her daughter Sam would become part of my life in wonderous ways...  Along  with my artwork I was offering workshops in nearby Quilters Studio, and though Sam was too young to join in Jake signed up for that class. During that first meeting Jake told me she was a writer first - quilter second but over the years I'd say she never really let on -- always being true to both in BIG ways.

This is Jake Finch who within several years of that first meet-up would embark on the grand journey of birthing Generation Q magazine along with Melissa Thompson Mayer.

 

I'd say the rest is history, a long history of chatting and friendship - life... but, it really is not history when the phone may ring at anytime to bring more sharing complete with trouble making & adverting.

Jake is a true friend, and I love all the people that have come together because of the magazine --- good, fun folks that I may never have met... Boy I would really have missed out! Let's see there's Vicki Tymczyszyn, Beverly Mabry, Tracy Mooney, Megan Dougherty, Scott Hansen and new to the team Teri Lucas.

Fast-Piece Applique: Blog Tour Day 3 Maddie Kertay --- SEXY

In her own words...she answers the question,
Who the heck is this Maddie person?

"I am the mother of seven kids ages 25 to 13, crazy huh? I share my life with my loves Les and Flaun and am the furry mom to multiple pets. I teach and lecture on quilting, creativity and social media all the while harboring a secret desire to learn to pole dance. On any given day, you can find me either in our amazing fabric store SPOOL or plotting the overthrow of the quilting world with radical ideas like acceptance and general BadAss good will."

All of this and more is why I love Maddie Kertay.

Her spirit is wild, yet loving in BIG ways.
and, she is more than willing to take on any GOOD battle.

I met Maddie at spring market in Portland where I gladly became a button wearing BadAss Quilting Society member. It was the market before she opened Spool -- her amazing store in Chattanooga, TN. I got to know her better that summer as the store came together. Maddie shared the ups and downs of it all,  and I consider myself a lucky girl to have been there for the opening.
